Improving living conditions for South Sudanese refugees in northern Uganda

Since the civil war in South Sudan began in December 2013, Uganda has received over one million refugees. As the conflict in 2016 spread to the Equatoria region, which borders northern Uganda, the number of refugees rose sharply and rapidly.

With funds from the Danish Emergency Relief Fund or Danish Emergency Relief Fund (DERF), we work to improve living conditions for approx. 20,000 South Sudanese refugees and locals at Rhino Camp in the West Nile district of northern Uganda.

Our aim is to improve living conditions by increasing the water supply with two water wells, improving sanitary conditions and establishing kitchen gardens so that they can grow and sell vegetables. We teach children and young people about human rights and organize loan savings groups across locals and refugees. It improves the relationship between the different groups and increases their income. Many of the activities have a special focus on vulnerable groups such as women, unaccompanied young people, children, the disabled and the elderly. The work is a collaboration between IAS Denmark and IAS Uganda.
